物の哀れ — "the pathos of things": the Japanese term for the tender awareness that nothing holds its shape forever.

A woman in a Heian kimono stands with her back to us, watching a town she will not recognise again. The casing enters at the upper left. At the centre, blossoms open around a single red bloom that is at once the sun of the flag and the fireball beneath it. The whole image is bleached pale, the way an overexposed photograph is bleached.

A homage to the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and to a culture remade in a single morning.
